It was another gorgeous day in paradise.
The sea was dead flat and the wind was just a very slight breeze from the
Southeast. I had been working this day on Great Keppel Island and in my
dinner break I decided to race down to the beach and have a quick swim.....of
course I took my 2kg outfit with me as I wanted to have a few casts at
the spot were I'd recently lost a massive Queenfish. I was out for revenge!
I put my rod down and quickly jumped into
the ocean to cool off. I kept thinking of the monster Queenfish I lost
not so long ago and whether I'd have any luck today. Time will tell. I
bailed out of the water and grabbed my rod once again and sprinted up to
my spot X!
I started throwing my metal Halco slice over
the gutter that is created from the ferry that transfers people too and
from the island. With only about 40 minutes left up my sleeve, I knew there
wasn't much time to waste. As the sun set, the baitfish got extremely finicky
close to shore. I sensed there were larger fish out there. When the water
exploded in front of my eyes sending Hardy Heads all over the shore I was
convinced.
My very next cast proved successful. My Ugly
Stick buckled and line screamed from my reel. All I could do is hold on,
wait and hope that the fish slowed down. It must of taken a good 100 meters
before I caught a glimpse of a splash to my right of where I thought my
fish was. I was a huge Queenfish going absolutely berserk. Jump after jump
the fish took as my line slowly bowed around to the right and finally became
tight. This fish was fast!
All that jumping took its toll on the fish
as it slowed and began to swim side to side about 80 meters out. By applying
constant pressure to the fish, he finally broke the pattern and began swimming
towards me and down deep into the gutter. I was very conscious of my line
snapping due to the fish being down deep over the drop-off. My line must
be rubbing on the sand I thought. The gigantic fish rose again breaking
the surface with a few more spectacular leaps only about 30 meters from
the shore. He was very tired as the lazy head shakes to dislodge the lure
proved. It sure was to be my lucky day and the Queeny finally succumbed
to my 2kg outfit fished to the limit!
I did feel very troubled by killing this
fish but I told myself "I've caught hundreds of Queenfish and never
killed one. I'll keep this fish".
Ten minutes later, after a couple of quick
pictures, I was back at work. I did weight the fish later that night on
the airport scales. 10.2kg on 2kg line....it was a world record......pity
I wasn't a member of the I.G.F.A!
