Maximum weight: 45kg (100lb)

Current all time I.G.F.A. record:    41.50kg (90lb 13oz) - Madeira Is. Portagul - 2 June, 1980

Mandible: Straight

Pectoral Fins: Short fins that fold flat along body.

Dorsal fin:    Retractable

Identifying features: Bill is shorter than head. Prominent lateral line. Long pelvic fins. High dorsal at front and curved as it tapers towards the body. Distance between anus and anal fin nearly equal to depth of anal fin.

Expected temperature range: 70° F to 86° F (21° C to 30° C)

Migration and breeding: COMING SOON!!!

Typical location: Open ocean along the continental shelf and current lines, ocean mountains and canyons. Floating logs and weed beds may also hold Spearfish. Rarely seen outside the Mediterranean.
 
Fighting characteristics: As the lightweights of the billfish family they perform well on light tackle with lightning runs and acrobatics.
